On the subject of punishment (Canada West 1862)

Superindentent William Fraser:

”Others make the poor children stand at the door on one leg, as if they were gees & trashed when they cannot support the centre of gravity… Others open a board or trap-door in the floor & drive them down there, telling them it is full of rattle snakes or ghosts; enough to drive them into fits… Some teachers punish them in wrath & rage which is always evil, striking them in the head , by the fist, the ruler or anything that comes to hand, and especially hurtful to hit them in the ear.”
